This first living specimen of the vigorous dawn redwood, known previously only as a fossil, was discovered in China in 1941. This decorative conifer forms a slim cone with shaggy cinnamon brown bark. The feathery needle like leaves are light green in the spring and darken to mid green in summer; in fall they turn pink, then a deep rust color.
Cultivation: Dawn redwood likes any good, moist but well drained, slightly acid soil. Pruning is seldom necessary. Pests include canker.
