Tree spotlight:  Magnolia tree

Height when mature:  12-80 ft

This genus of trees boasts the famous evergreen southern magnolia and many fine deciduous species. They have a handsome, broadly lace shaped foliage and spectacular blossoms: the exquisitely formed chalice, or goblet shaped flowers in shades of pink, purple and white ofter open out flat to a witch of 25 cm.

Most tree magnolias do not bloom until they are 15 to 20 years old.  Shrubby magnolias bloom when young.  If planted to the north of their recommended range, many magnolias will survive, but their flowers are likely to fall prey to late falls.
